Barber Instruction Generator

Barbers use different terms for the same haircut in different shops — a “number 2 fade” in one shop might be called a “low taper” in another. This mismatch is one of the most common reasons men leave the barber chair unhappy. Use the tool below to generate one clear, standardized instruction you can show any barber, in any shop.

FAQs

What’s the difference between a taper and a fade?

A taper gradually shortens hair without exposing skin, while a fade blends the hair all the way down to bare skin. Fades create a sharper contrast; tapers look softer and more natural.

What guard number is a skin fade?

A skin fade typically starts with a 00 or 0 guard (or no guard, using the clipper blade directly) at the bottom and blends up into longer lengths higher on the head.

How do I ask for a fade without it being too short?

Specify a mid or low fade instead of a high fade, and ask the barber to blend it into a longer length on top, such as 2 to 3 inches, rather than leaving the sides very short.

Can I use this tool’s instructions with any barber?

Yes. The instructions use standard industry terms for fades, tapers, length, and texture, so they work with any barber regardless of shop or location.
